Stevns Klint

Not far from Rødvig Camping you can experience the majestic Cliffs of Stevns

The Cliff consists of limestone and chalk, and a look through these layers gives a fascinating view of Danish history. One of the more fascinating facts of this layout is the layer that divides the two. The Fish Layer, which consists, as is evident from the name, of fossils of fish and fish gills. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Cliffs is the geological discovery of a high amount of iridium, which tells a tale of a world wide natural disaster 65 million years ago. At Hoejerup the Fish Layer can be spotted approximately halfway down the Cliff.

The Chalk layer began assembling approximately 70 million years ago, and is the foundation of the Cliffs. Within this layer discoveries of fossilised sharks and crocodiles from the Late Cretaceous Period have shed light on some of the animals that lived near The Cliff of Stevns initially, if you’re lucky, you may even be able to spot some of these remnants. However, if you cannot spot this, then a visit to Stevns museum is always advisable if you’re interested in fossils.

Højerup old Church

At the edge of The Cliff of Stevns there is a Church- Højerup old Church that was built in the 13th century. Legend tells us that the church moves inland each year on Christmas Night; however this could not avert the natural disaster that struck in 1928: one of the fascinating stories in this region is the fact that due to water erosion the church tower collapsed in 1928 and landed on the beach. Each year approximately 10 cm (Approx. 5 inches) of the Cliff is swallowed by continual water erosion. Originally the church was built 50 m. inland of the Cliffs edge, and now the church stands at the water edge. In order to avert further disasters the Church has had a support wall built on the cliff, and at sea level a rock formation has been strategically positioned to avoid further corrosion in the near future. During daytime there is free entrance to the church, and make sure that if you do visit to go on the balcony and take in the stunning view.

Next to Hoejrup old Church (Højerup gl. Kirke) a flight of stairs leads downward to the beach. The beach with its limestone is not created for an extended exceedingly saunter; however it is impressive to see the Cliffs from the beach. If you are at the church, make sure you do take this walk, it is especially beautiful during the noon hour, and in the early morning where it looks extraordinary.

The tramp-path of Stevns Klint

Stevns Clint has a coastline that is 42 Km long, and offers a wide variety of adventures. It is a nice adventure to walk the path along the cliffs, experiencing the unique nature as well as the attractive and dramatic view.
The 22 km path runs between the harbours of Rødvig and Bøgeskov.
In the leaflet “Enjoy the Thrills of Stevns Klint”, there is a detailed description of what to see along the path as well as a map. It is possible to order the leaflet from the tourist office of Stevns.

Use of the path is at your own responsibility! Bicycling and dogs running loose are NOT allowed

Rødvig Havn - worth a visit

Just 2 km. from the camping is Rødvig town and harbour.

To many the harbour of Rødvig is considered to be the very essence of Stevns. This is because of the many yachtsmen, who visit the yachting marina and adjoining fishing harbour each year.

Just next to the yachting marina, you will find the very trademark of Rødvig – the flint oven. The oven was used from 1870-1910 to produce flint powder for
faience and glaze for porcelain, from flintstones found on the beaches nearby. For more information about the cliff, please ask for the brochure “Enjoy the thrills of Stevns Klint” from the information at Rødvig Camping

There are 6 restaurants / places to dine in Rødvig.

You can walk from the camping to the harbour by walking to the beach, then following the coast, or you can go by car or bicycle.

The beach - nearby

Not far from the camping, you find a nice, sandy beach, safe for the children, and known as the best beach at Stevns.

About 10 minutes walk - or 900 meter - brings you to the beach. Turn right out from the camping, then the first street on your left, (Maelskifterne), and strait through the summer-house area – follow the path across the grass-meadow, then continue strait ahead at Pileager and Gøgevej, to the beach.

Enjoy the water in the summer, or a good 10-15 min. walk along the beach to the harbour the rest of the year.

Churches - Make it a day trip

When driving along on the curved roads on Stevn, passing through many villages  one is often astonished by the many well preserved, old village churches.

On the photo to the left you find the Sct. Katharina Church in St. Heddinge. Sct. Katharina is unique in Denmark. It was build in th 13.th century with an octagonal nave. To the sides of the nave are cloistes with secret rooms built for defends purposes and this was most likely part of a monastery. According to the legend it was here that the Cliff King defended Stevns from foreign enemies.

There are 19 village-churges on Stevns.

Copenhagen - The beautiful capital of Denmark

Combining camping and urban holidays is a possibility when you stay at Rødvig Camping. One of Europe's capitals with an international athmosphere is only 1 hour away. So if you want to stroll throug the shopping streets, take the children to Tivoli, or exploit all the other possibilities of the big city, it is all within reach from Rødvig Camping.

Drive your car all the way to Copenhagen, it takes about 1 hour. Or alternatively avoid the parking-problems in the city, and drive to Køge, where you can park at a large, free parking-area near to the train-station, and take the S-train to Copenbagen Center.

In Køge, you can buy a 24-hour ticket for the whole capital area, covering all trains and busses. This is cheaper than buying a return-ticket to CPH. Children travel free together with adults.

There is also a local train from Rødvig to Køge. We are happy to help you with information about timetables in the camping-reception.

By Bike -

The nature of Stevns is ideal for bicycle trips. It is rather flat, with lots of small, curved roads, between the many villages. A well marked bicycle route passes the camping - route 9 -Berlin-Coponhagen.

For the less hardcore cyclists you can cheat a little, and take the train some of the way.

In the tourist office or at Rødvig Camping you can get a folder with different bicycle routes at Stevns.
